Asia Insider wanted to offer a service to its Asian clients in which the Business Writing Center would critique writing samples to provide the nonnative speakers of English with an indication of what they need to do to polish and clarify their writing in English.

They wanted training that would

  1. be handled in blocks of text so the company could charge its clients for the service based on the amount of writing
  2. use a convenient marking system clients could understand
  3. have writing evaluated by a qualified specialist in business writing
  4. make available other resources if the client wanted to pursue a formal program in writing

The Business Writing Center developed a training design that

  1. is Internet-based so trainees can take it anywhere in the world
  2. guarantees the individual attention of a qualified writing instructor through an 800 number and e-mail address
  3. is handled in blocks of 500 words (about one page) so the company can charge its clients for the service based on the amount of writing
  4. uses Microsoft Word's reviewing and editing marking system so clients can easily see the suggested changes and notes explaining them
  5. uses the services of two faculty, one of whom has a PhD in writing training and the other has a MA in training adults and writing
  6. makes available the other Business Writing Center courses if the client wants to pursue a formal program in writing
