Creating a Workforce that Communicates Clearly in Writing
|
|
Any business or agency can have a workforce that communicates clearly, consistently, and effectively in writing. Frustrations with unclear, poorly written e-mail are not inevitable--they result from having unclear expectations and standards for writing quality.
The Business Writing Center shows companies how to develop a workforce that communicates clearly in writing, provides the standards for employees to follow, and trains staff. The training is based on the book, Explicit Business Writing: Best Practices for the Twenty-First Century.
The Business Writing Center trains company staff through online, instructor-led courses and workshops presented at company sites. The courses are self-pacing, individualized, and competency-based with regular evaluations throughout the courses and final evaluations. The Center customizes courses and on-site workshops for companies when requested. For example, the Center will reduce the size of a course to the essentials when employees cannot devote considerable time to the courses. That also reduces training cost.
Customizing the Training Book to Your Company
The Business Writing Center will customize the book, Explicit Business Writing: Best Practices for the Twenty-First Century, to your company's or agency's specific writing needs. It can include your examples and standards. The book would then be proprietary to your company. Your company name will appear on the cover and the book will be perfect bound. Depending on quantity, the cost likely will not be any more than the cost of a standard textbook. Contact the Business Writing Center for more information at publications@businesswriting.com.
Customizing Writing Course Development
The Business Writing Center will develop customized workshops and online courses for your company or agency by working with your subject-matter experts to identify the training your employees need and creating the course that will provide it. Project director for customized course development is Robert Craig Hogan, whose Ph.D. is in curriculum development and supervision. More . . ..
Progress Reports
An online or printed progress form is available so administrators can monitor trainee progress. To see a sample of the form, click here.
Ratings of Writing Competence
Business Writing Center professional staff evaluate employees' writing and provide ratings of competence, summaries of employees' strengths and weaknesses, and recommendations for training. The ratings can be presented in a detailed report or simple rating with rater notes. The ratings can be used to assess employees' training needs, evaluate their progress in accomplishing personal competency objectives, or measure the effectiveness of training provided by the company or consultants.
For more information about the ratings, click here.
Ensuring Employees Write Effectively
The most effective way to cultivate clear writing among employees is to have a corporate culture that encourages quality writing and offers the training they need to be able to write well. Center professional staff work with companies to develop a brief, customized writing-standards booklet to give clarity and consistency to e-mails, letters, memos, and reports. The Center will then develop an online course or workshop to train employees in the skills. The training may be administered by Center faculty or the company's trainers.
