Individualized Writing Courses

Courses for Nonnative Speakers of English

The Business Writing Center offers three courses to help nonnative speakers of English polish their business writing language skills. The courses are intended for nonnative speakers of English who have mastered English but now need to polish their use of phrases, articles, modal auxiliaries, tenses, and the other areas that commonly cause problems for speakers of English as a second language.

Three of the courses are highly individualized tutorials that will focus on your individual writing skills needs. You will have two trainers who work with you throughout the course. The fourth is a survey that covers all of the common problems experienced by speakers of English as a second language.

These courses may be taken at the same time you take Business Writing Skills or any of the specialized writing courses such as Editing Skills.

These are the courses now open:

  • BWC120 Overview of Common ESL Problems (survey course)
  • BWC130 Individualized Writing for Nonnative Speakers of English
  • BWC140 Writing Coaching for Executive Nonnative Speakers
         of English

Training in Grammar, Punctuation,
Sentence Structure, and Spelling

The Business Writing Center offers the individualized course, BWC110 Basic Grammar Skills Tutorial, to help business people learn how to use correct grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and spelling. The course is very effective in teaching the skills because it is individualized to suit each student's needs.

In it, an instructor evaluates writing samples, identifying every usage problem and correcting each to show how it should have been written. The instructor then lists the sentences with the same type of problem together so the student can see the way in which he or she is consistently making the same error. With each list of sentences, the instructor includes explanations of the problems and assignments from the grammar textbook. The student has unlimited access to the instructor to ask questions while reading the assignments and studying the corrected sentences.

The instructor then administers an online quiz that presents ten of the student's own sentences from the original document with the errors still in them. The quiz is timed, so the student must know how to write the sentences without the errors to pass the quiz. If the quiz score is low, the instructor helps the student learn the skills until he or she passes the quiz.

That process continues through five writing samples. The course is self-pacing, so the student decides when to work.

Courses for Business people Who Want to
Focus on Specific Needs or Types of Writing

The Business Writing Center offers BWC510 Individualized Writing Course to allow business people to choose specific needs or types of writing on which to focus. The participant works with the instructor to design the course of study at the beginning of the course, but the design may change at any time.

Business people have developed individualized courses in newsletter-article writing, writing workshop training materials, writing speeches, writing in three or four media their jobs require, and a host of other areas. Some have asked to combine lessons they want from several Business Writing Center courses. Any options for writing training are available through this course.
